Global trends for MBA programs.

After gathering some years of work practice and experiencing that I had already “hit bottom” in my business, I asked myself the following question: “What’s next?” I thought a lot about that idea for a few months and then I started considering the option of studying a postgraduate course and taking my profession to the next step.

I started looking for options and I find that business schools around the world remain in constant evolution to raise their quality. Learning from current trends is valuable to me and I suggest doing the same process to all those who are pondering the possibility of studying an MBA. Here I leave the world trends:

Executive MBA:

They are very demanded at the present time, their objective is to train professionals for the management of businesses or companies. They are aimed at people with some years of management experience, are excellent for managers, executives and managers who need to reinforce their knowledge.

The focus changes a little with respect to the MBA full time, because the students already have advanced notions about business management and are part-time. In my personal case, I don’t have managerial and directive experience, so from the start I knew it wasn’t the right choice for me.

One of my main fears is to leave the job. Will it cost Me to find one after the MBA? Will I be left behind? How will I survive without a steady salary? Are some of the thoughts that make me basilar to do a postgraduate.

And when I talked to other colleagues, I realized that many young people shared that fear. That’s why online MBA’s have taken power; You take the courses online, you can continue to work and study from your home, office or any country. Flexibility is attractive; However, thinking more deeply, I considered that aspects that are important to me are sacrificed.

For example, networking. Classmates and teachers become contacts and not in many places you have the opportunity to acquire such a wide and heterogeneous network of contacts. You also lose the discussion in class and I feel that knowing different points of view helps us to be more complete professionals with different perspectives.

Full-time programs are highly sought after by those who want to have the full experience. They allow to focus on the program at 100%, increasing the degree of collaboration and responsibility.

It is not only appropriate to acquire managerial or administrative knowledge. Aspects such as emotional intelligence, teamwork and critical thinking make it possible to shape innovative leaders and represent an added value at the professional level.  The 24/7 immersion of the full time makes the incrmento of these skills develop exponentially and are achieved in a shorter time.

This type of MBA allows to have an experiential study. Now some business schools have seen that they must implement what they learned and have opted to use the case method, where they solve real business problems. They also provide internships, consulting projects and international exchanges such as INCAE Business School to Silicon Valley, one of the schools that has caught my attention.

Within the full time mode, there are programs that allow to carry out concentrations. Organizations are suing professionals who assume leadership roles in specific areas and with such a program, I can boost my profession by developing management skills, but diferenciándome through a specialization.  (It’s like getting the best of two worlds in a single MBA!)

Would it please you to have the opportunity to internationalise your career? Now business schools are looking to have a global offer and are incorporating international experiences as a key component in their curriculum.

This makes it easier for students to acquire a network of international contacts and extended work opportunities at the global level. Multiculturalism in the course enriches the different perspectives and allows the comprehension of different realities and cultural contexts.

Added to this, many have agreements with other universities and could be a bridge to take courses in other continents and add value to our CV. In my personal case, I am employed by a transnational and I would like to continue developing my career in that area. Today it is very important to have an international orientation that allows us to develop in global markets.

These are the current trends, knowing them gives us more clarity when we make our decision on what program to study and provide tools for a more complete survey. In my case, networking, practical study and multicultural contact are aspects of weight that I will take into account at the time of the final decision, because I am unequivocal that they can really make a positive difference in the development of my professional life.

The fruits of a master’s degree in Business Administration are established: there is a substantial improvement in salary remuneration, an extension of the network of contacts, knowledge of the management tools, greater opportunities to access a position Management and the growing demand for highly qualified professionals are some of the reasons why you should have focused your interest in taking a master’s degree in administration.
So before you follow an MBA it’s important that you consider following some tips:

Align your career

As tempting as the benefits of completing an MBA, you must have your career well defined and determine if you need to follow the course. This is important because the investment in time and money is considerable and should be carefully meditated. The alignment of your professional goals will also help you to better choose the type of MBA program that fits your needs. For example, if you are working in a multinational company and want to climb a management post, it is important that you find out about the master’s centers in business that your company considers most prestigious; Instead if you are an entrepreneur and want to run your own company, you could avoid the most expensive and prestigious schools and opt for something more economical but good quality.

Consider Online preparation

The option of on-line studies of MBA is becoming more and more popular, this due to the improvements related to the technology that makes possible the exchange of information on line, added to the ample number of benefits that offers this type of programs. One of the strengths of online preparation is the flexibility of schedules, which allows you to work and study simultaneously without having to waste time or money movilizándote to the center of Studies, in addition to rubbing with people from different parts of the World, which puts into practice the true concept of a global networking. This type of preparation adapts very well to self-taught people.

Perseverance much perseverance

Combining this type of preparation with work and personal relationships will require the maximum of your effort. Many MBA students do not have free time at all, so do not be discouraged that all this sacrifice is worthwhile. Watch out for stress that can seriously affect your health. I recommend you take vitamin supplements and follow a proper diet. Perseverance is the key to everything and always be aware of the reason why you have decided to undertake this great project.

Follow an MBA Full time or better one Part time

Leave the job to follow an MBA or follow it while you work? That’s the dilemma. According to Henry Mintzberg in his book managers not MBAs, he emphasizes the need to train executives who not only focus on the theory but also on the practice of administration, criticizes the formation of young students with little work experience in the world Real and suggests to focus training on the actual practice of administration and not just focus on science.

The fact of getting ready while you work gives you a better perspective and more use of the course, because among the classmates can share their work experiences and go enriched together. In addition the benefit of the knowledge acquired in the classrooms whether real or virtual can be put into practice for the good of the company.

From the beginning you have to make it clear: it is a postgraduate analysis that is not very economic but which, instead, can produce a good investment. But there are different points to consider when you look at the cost of an MBA, because it can change depending on the type of program:  whether it’s full-time, half-time or an EMBA.

Generally, on average, the cost of a full-time MBA can achieve more than $100,000, with annual tuition exceeding US $50000, excluding child support costs, if it is to develop this training at the international level.

In terms of costs in Colombia, on average for 2015, this may cost close to $45 million the full investment, this will depend on the institution that has been selected.

At present, the University of the Andes, the Universidad Javeriana, the university Sergio Arboleda, the Icesi, the Inalde and the EAFIT; They are several of the organizations that offer the program.

Most of them also operate and offer the various modalities that have already been mentioned. Therefore, anyone considering doing such an analysis should think about the opportunity cost, as most of these applicants will have to leave their job to be a full-time student.

However, to reduce some costs to the students of this program, there is a great diversity of entities and the same universities that offer financial aid and scholarships. Thus, “the most frequent feature of the scholarships is based on the merits and the type of scholarship proposed depends on each program. Most MBA programs offer this kind of scholarships especially for international students, “added seasoned CEO and General manager of the MBA Tour.

Of course, estimating an investment of this kind seems absurd and is not within the reach of any individual. Even, because this kind of study is much more common to think about doing it abroad. Thus, the most popular destinations for Latino students are the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Most (more than 51%) want to study in the United States. After completing their MBA program, students return to their home country to apply their new skills for growth and development.

Although it can be so expensive, this model of programs can bring you a sufficiently high benefit to your career: on the other hand, wage increases are relevant (to be calculated in more than 160%, according to an article in the Republic, which It will clearly help your financial situation and the possibility to quickly recover the investment made.

According to Peter Von Loesecke, CEO and general manager of the MBA Tour, he proposes that if you are interested in developing an MBA, it is more convenient to do the research on the topic: “You can start with the online search for General advice on MBA programs, as well as the specific search of the business schools of interest. An MBA is a diploma intended for executives and people already working who wish to open up to the international world.

MBA : definition

However, not all MBA candidates can, or will, take two years away from their professional activity.

For them, there is the remote MBA:

This training can be followed thanks to multimedia, without having to travel: an innovative teaching method combining residential modules and e-learning.
Two thirds of the courses are taken at a distance. The rest consists of studies followed in different European cities.

Benefits of this MBA

Choosing a remote MBA has its advantages :

Remote MBAs are less expensive.
The class size is reduced to a maximum of 20 students per class.
Just like a traditional training, the distance MBA is done over 2 years.
The candidate can keep his professional activity.
The schedules are flexible and the student works at his own pace.
Disadvantages of Remote MBA

Remote MBA does not only have advantages:

There is little or no exchange with other students and teachers.
The dropout rate is very high.
Networking of services is limited and student support is not personalised.
Unlike Part Time MBAs, remote MBAs are only very rarely accredited by AMBA, EQUIS or AACSB.
